Watches that I want to have in my collection, Rolex, Tag Heuer, Omega, JLC

As a watch enthusiast, I often find myself dreaming about the next timepiece to add to my collection. Each watch tells a story, whether it’s about craftsmanship, heritage, or personal milestones.

Here are some of the ways I think about watch collection:

A watch for my parents

There’s something special about giving a timepiece that you would eventually remember your parents by when they eventually pass away. There’s this nice feeling of putting on a watch or holding on to a watch that was once worn daily by them.

This watch is a perfect choice — no battery change is required ever, runs perpetually, and there’s no danger of worrying that they will be setting the dates wrongly at the wrong time between 9pm to 3am.

I personally like the blue dial Solargraph, and will want it to be part of my collection eventually.

A watch to commemorate the birth of a child

I find it pretty cool to point at a watch and say that this watch is the same age as you kiddo. It’s a good reminder of the early days of parenting when the passage of time erodes away at our memories.

A Rolex watch will be perfect for this occasion. With its precision of -2/+2 sec/day, after casing and a high power reserve of 70 hours, this is a perfect weekend watch with your kids.

A watch that you would at most wear once or twice a year

I enjoy dressing down, in the rare event in which I need to dress up for a wedding or to dine in a fancy restaurant, a dressy watch is required. I find the JLC Reverso perfect for this occasion. Originally built for polo players to ride a horse while playing, this watch has evolved into a nice classic dress watch perfect for most formal occasions.

For 5000 SGD more, you can get the duo face, which allows you to flip the watch to reveal another watch face.

A daily beater watch

I’ve a couple of candidates in mind for a watch to be worn on Mondays to Fridays. I want something that is scratch-resistant, and long-lasting if it's to be under the sun daily. Watches made up of titanium, ceramic, or stainless steel with ceramic bezel are some of my top choices.

The watch should also be sporty looking without looking too formal. Here are some of my choices

Ceramic bezels, compared to a Tudor with alum bezels which tends to fade in color.
Rado ceramic watches. Bracelet, case, bezels are all ceramic
Zenith Defy — full ceramic watch

A watch that you would wear to impress people

I find that in Asia, appearance matters more than in the Bay Area. If there’s a need to impress people to build confidence, the Rolex sky dweller is perfect for this. It’s not crazily expensive to be labelled as a snob, nor is it considered cheap in the luxury watch sector either. It’s also pretty dressy and comes with the iconic Rolex fluted design.

The Grail watch

A Patek Philippe Aquanaut will be my Grail watch of choice. It’s the most affordable entry into Patek Philipe line of watches, and a part of me cannot get over the thought of spending more than 50K USD on watches anyway. I will be satisfied to have just one of this in my collection. As the saying goes, you only look after a Patek for the next generation =P
